Pastoral Leadership

Elders serve the church by leading. Southern Hills is led by a plurality of elders who are responsible for the pastoral care and oversight of the church.

Kyle GAngel

Kyle is the primary preaching elder at SHBC. Originally from Colorado, he moved to Custer from Springfield, Missouri where he served as a discipleship pastor for 10 years at Graceway Baptist Church. While in Springfield, Kyle received his MA in biblical counseling and M. Div. from Baptist Bible Seminary. He and his wife Liz have three young boys.

Dave Johnson

Dave is a family physician, living and working in Rapid City. He and his wife Teresa are geared towards ministry and are each in the midst of earning a Master’s of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Master’s Seminary. They have four grown children.

Geoff Sheehy

Geoff lives in Rapid City and works as an English teacher for one of the public high schools there. He has taught Bible hour classes on 1, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and Philippians. He is pursuing biblical counseling certification through ACBC. He and his wife Kiersten have four children.

Dan Youngren

Dan is SHBC’s longest serving elder. By profession Dan is a dentist. He owned a practice in Minnesota and raised his kids there but eventually retired to Custer. He still practices dentistry in Rapid City a couple days per week. Dan and Barb’s children are all grown and married, living in Minnesota and Iowa.


 
 

Deacons

Deacons lead through serving the church. Southern Hills is served by deacons who meet biblical character requirements and are set apart to handle specific physical or ministerial needs of the church.

John Colyer

John has been a deacon at Southern Hills Bible Church for over a decade. He is recently retired and enjoys spending time with his wife Kathy. John serves the church by overseeing the buildings, serving the widows of the church, organizing a monthly worship service at a local nursing home, among many other responsibilities.

 

DAVID FIELDS

David Fields became a deacon in the Spring of 2022. David is retired and enjoys spending time studying the Word and serving others alongside his wife Barbara. David serves the church through organizing volunteers, reaching out to others, and making visits to those who need some extra encouragement.
